Irena Engelmann studied English and American Literature, English Linguisitics, Bulgarian Literature and Bulgarian Language at the University of Sofia (Bulgaria). She worked as an English teacher in Bulgaria. As of 1993, Irena Engelmann has been living in Switzerland. Since 2001, she worked as an English teacher in the Canton of Fribourg, and 2003 she received the diploma to teach Russian and English in secondary school.
From 2005 to 2023, Irena Engelmann worked as a Bulgarian lecturer at the Unviersity of Bern.
