Yannis Kakridis studied Slavic Philology, Byzantine Studies and German. He received his PhD in 1988 and his habilitation in 1995. He undertook several study and research trips to Sofia, Belgrade and Moscow and was a Feodor Lynen scholar of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation at the UC Berkely. Between 1999 and 2001 he was an Associate Professor of Slavistics at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki. From 2001 to 2022 he held the chair for Slavic Philology at the University of Bern.
